An expectant mum from Southend in Essex is set to miss the birth of her own baby as her C-section has been booked for 3pm on Saturday – the exact time when England’s crunch World Cup quarter-final against Sweden gets underway in Russia.

Michelle Garridge and her partner Kuwait already know that they are expecting a baby boy, but she told Southend News Network that she was ‘beside herself’ when doctors at Southend Hospital told her that her planned Caesarian could only take place at the same time as the big game.

She added, ‘My only option is to watch the game down The Bell while the surgeons get on with the procedure.’

‘It’s not a huge problem for me anyway. As long as it doesn’t go to extra time and penalties, I reckon I will be able to have my first cuddle at around 5pm.’

‘I tried reasoning with the surgical team to try and get them to change the time, but apparently they have other patients that use the theatres for other things.’
