We are delighted to announce that our fundraising campaign to cover Katie Hopkins’ legal bills and libel damages has hit an amazing £1400 in just TWO HOURS!
As you will all probably be aware by now, on 10th March 2017 Katie Hopkins was ordered by a judge at the High Court in London to pay £24,000 in libel damages to Southend-based food blogger and poverty campaigner Jack Monroe after she posted a tweet in 2015 that alleged that Monroe had applied graffiti to a war memorial.
Hopkins has also been ordered to pay legal costs, and these have been estimated to hit the £300,000 mark!
So, given that Southend News Network has a long and proud history when it comes to Katie Hopkins (remember when we did THIS to her), we decided that we simply had to try and help this beautiful and talented journalist cover what could amount to £324,000 and seriously affect her glittering career.
However, as this is Southend News Network, all it not quite as it seems! All money raised will actually be donated to The Trussell Trust – a fabulous charity that works tirelessly to operate foodbanks all over the UK so that people who are in need of emergency food supplies can receive a few days worth of food when they have nowhere else to turn to.
To make all of this even sweeter, Katie herself dissed these guys back in 2015!
Around 500,000 three-day emergency food parcels are given out every six months in the UK, with almost 200,000 of these going to families with children – this is why we chose them to benefit from this campaign.
