ITV have announced that the recently departed ex-president of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe is set to join the campmates as a late entry in the latest series of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.

According to sources, a place on the show was a major bargaining tool in negotiations between Mugabe and the armed forces of the African nation, and it was ‘touch and go’ for a while as initially ITV were only prepared to offer a role on Love Island.

One source added: ‘Mr Mugabe has been a fan of Ant and Dec for many years, and at one point he even drafted a parliamentary bill to have the nation’s national anthem changed to Let’s Get Ready To Rumble.’

‘It’s not very well-known that inside one of his palaces there is a full-scale replica of the youth club from Byker Grove.’

‘There was even talk of the capital being Howay-We in their honour.’

An ITV spokesperson said: ‘We are delighted that Robert has jumped on a plane and is currently heading down under to join what has to be our strongest ever lineup of celebrities.’

‘There may even be a bit of camp romance in the air as he has hinted that he ‘greatly admires’ Rebekah Vardy.’

However, news of Mugabe’s arrival has already reached the camp, and some contestants are reported to be ‘very unhappy’ with the news.

Dennis Wise in particular is said to be ‘raging and pacing around like a possessed wallaby on LSD,’ and he hasn’t even found out about the new campmate yet.

For medical reasons, Mugabe will be unable to take part in any of the Bush Tucker Trials.
