West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini has told the press that coming from 1-0 down to beat League One AFC Wimbledon 3-1 is probably not only the greatest achievement of his managerial career, but possibly also one of the most remarkable success stories in the history of world football.

He said, ‘We were completely up against it right from the kick off. Their world class squad. Their multi-million pound facilities. Them playing for 72 minutes with only ten men. Everything.’

‘As soon as we went 1-0 down, we knew that we would have to dig deep and pull out all the stops to overcome a team that was playing in the Conference in 2011.’

A journalist then asked, ‘Manuel, who would you like to face in the next round, seeing that you have found it tricky to progress against a team from the third tier of English football?’

Pellegrini replied, ‘Que?’

However, there may be a glimmer of hope for AFC Wimbledon, after it emerged that West Ham officials have been in touch with the Football Association to ask if last night’s Coconut Cup victory can be swapped for three Premier League points instead.
